How to treat Maskne?
Ah maskne, the latest skin condition affecting the majority of the population now that we are required to wear face coverings in our day to day lives. No, the solution is most definitely not to stop wearing a face covering it is just about streamlining your routine to incorporate a few ingredients and products that tackle the condition head on.
What is Maskne anyway?
Maskne, also known as acne mechanics,is acne that is caused by heat and friction of wearing a mask.
By wearing a mask, a warm and moist environment is created from breathing which then leads to an overgrowth of bacteria leading to breakouts. The friction of the mask combined with our skin's natural oil and sweat causes irritation.
How do I treat AND avoid maskne?
Mask choice matters.
Choose a mask made from tightly woven, soft cotton fabric.
Wash your mask regularly with mild detergent and thoroughly rinsed.
Skincare Routine - what to include.
Cleanse twice a day with a cleanser suitable to your skin type. Removing bacteria, impurities and excess oils from the day and night will reduce the chance of breakouts and build up of bacteria.
Exfoliate using Salicylic Acid (BHA) 2 - 3 times a week. BHA will clean out your pores and remove dead skin cells. This will help reduce excess oil, bacteria build up and inflammation.
Apply Niacinamide Serum. Niacinamide regulates oil production, hydrates skin and minimises pores - it is a superstar ingredient when it comes to tackling acne and breakouts.
Azelaic Acid - a key product for treating acne. It kills the bacteria that can infect pores by reducing the overproduction of keratin and result in breakouts. It also reduces hyperpigmentation and acne scarring.
Apply a lightweight moisturiser. Applying a moisturiser creates a barrier between your skin and mask and will ultimately protect the skin barrier and reduce friction. Oil free moisturisers are super effective for oily/acne prone skin as it does not add more oil to your skin.
